How It Works

Moisture content (MC) is calculated as: MC = (Wet Weight - Dry Weight) / Dry Weight x 100. For indoor furniture, target 6-8% MC. For outdoor projects, 12-14% MC is acceptable. Air-dried lumber reaches about 12-15% MC; kiln drying brings it to 6-8%. Using wood that is too wet causes joints to open and surfaces to crack as it dries.
