How It Works

Standard deck boards are 5/4x6 (actual 1" x 5.5") for wood or various widths for composite. Leave a 1/8" gap between boards for drainage and expansion (use a nail as a spacer). Pressure-treated pine is cheapest ($1-2/linear ft), cedar is mid-range ($3-5/ft), and composite decking is $4-12/ft. Buy 10-15% extra for waste and defects.
